So today at the customary 2 pm after-bar breakfast, me and Gord and Kyle and Alicia talked about the possibilities of an Earth with continents separated by oceans of molten lava.

It wasn't supposed to be this way. Initially we were talking about wasting potatoes, a few rogue home fries left remaining on Alicia's plate. As conversations typically meander, this one quickly travelled onwards to the Irish potato famine, then to the British cultural takeover of Ireland and finally to English colonialization in general. As the status quo, I can ramble about postcolonialism for hours, which is why I was a little surprised that my mind settled on molten lava seas as a topic.

My reasoning: If the seas were uncrossable, culture clash would not be a problem. And what better way to divide continents than with huge gulfs of lava, immense trenches of impassable heat? Kyle rudely pointed out that seas filled with water are an essential element of human life, but I was unfazed by science's cruel tethers.

The point was made. This world could be created, through words. If it wasn't such a hackneyed sci-fi concept, I could build it into a true mythology, a reality. We tend to drift into ridiculous conversation, but the knowledge that language give us the power to shape ridiculousness into a tangible story is empowering in a way. It gives life to the stupid rambles of the imagination.

Now if only I had the time and motivation to start constructing these worlds...
