Lovecraft book, you know, one of those books about pulling aside the veil to reveal a seething morass of unspeakable underworld horrors? Yeah. The front cover features a pile of human skulls. So I'm on the bus, reading this book, and a small family gets on. There's only one seat left and it's beside me. The dad indicates to his maybe five-year old daughter to sit down... she takes one look at me (dressed all in black, as it happens), her eye catches my book of evils and she retreats as far as she can, shaking her head in mute terror. I think it may be a testament to ol' Lovecraft that he can have such a soft-porn name and yet still manage to scare the fucking shit out of people with his stories, both those who read them and those who happen to be in their general periphery. Really, do you think with a name like Lovecraft that it was any wonder he turned the other way, focusing his attention on the demoniac hatreds of the Abyss?
